NYA: PlayQuarium
PlayQuarium is a children’s exhibit at the New York Aquarium that provides up-close animal views and immersive opportunities for imaginative role-play, and habitat exploration. With a cognitive goal to inspire children with an appreciative affinity for marine life, marine environments, and discovery of the natural world.
The nature of the illustrations needed to find a balance of both a friendly and playful visual language all the while maintaining representational accuracy of species depicted.

The PlayQuarium exhibit was designed around encouraging children and parents to learn, explore and role-play together. The PlayQuarium logo mark abstracts the letterforms of the P and Q to represent a child and parent fish engaging one another in play.

Each section of the exhibit represents a different aquatic ecosystem. In order to quickly distinguish one biome from the other, a color pallet inspired by the color of the water of the corresponding environment was implemented into the visual language.
